Do not use wax to seal chalk paint - RAWHyde Furnishings (2)

I don't use wax to seal chalk paint to furniture. Man, it's liberating to say that. Everything I know about painting furniture I learned through trial and error and reading other painters' blogs. Since I started using chalk and similar paints, everything I've read and everyone I've talked to says that wax is the ideal finish to seal chalk paint. That was until I met Maria Revollo of ML Furniture Decor. María and I met at a painting workshop she was organizing to teach her the Bermuda Blending technique.

Why don't I use wax to seal chalk paint?

Here are my issues with wax finishes. I know there will be some who disagree, and I'm fine with that. I invite you to share your thoughts on waxes and top coats in the comments below.

  1. Applying wax is a very laborious process., in my opinion. It's an arm and a half job. Sometimes I finish painting a piece of furniture and it stays in my workshop for a week or more because I'm afraid I'm going to run out of wax. (I'm sure part of that is because I'm a little lazy. ;) )
  2. No matter how many blogs or FAQs you read about applying a wax finish, videos you watch on how to do it right, etc.,I am never fully satisfied with the finish.. I end up with visible streaks or bits from the cloth I'm using / brush bristles in the finish. This is particularly problematic with darker ink colors.
  3. Cure time is NOT realistic for commission projects. Annie Sloan Wax suggests a period of 30 days to allow the finish to fully cure and set. I find the finish to be very durable once fully cured. However, if I'm renovating a piece of furniture for a client, I want them to be able to take it home and use it right away. It feels weird to tell them they have to wait 30 days to use their freshly painted furniture normally.
  4. The TN humidity this summer just won't allow the wax to cure!I painted a coffee table for my dear friends and the poor people are STILL waiting for the wax to fully cure and harden. Guys, it's been THREE months! Last time I walked in, I confessed my newly admitted dislike of wax finishes and offered to put a different finish on them. It is simply unacceptable.
  5. Cannot be painted on waxed piece. If I get tired of the color of a piece I've painted and waxed to seal the paint, I have to remove the wax first before painting over the piece. What work!! With a polycrylic finish, you can simply sand it lightly and paint over it!

What is the alternative to wax for sealing chalk paint?

So now that you know my reasons for ditching wax finishes, you might be wondering which finishes I like to go with. My favorite top coat isWise Owl Varnish. It's available in a matte or satin gloss, which in my opinion are the only two options you need when hand painting furniture.

This product is easy to apply, dries quickly, is highly durable and the furniture can be used normally almost immediately! (Technically, there's still a 30-day cure time, but the finish is dry enough to handle in 24 hours.) I've used polyester top coats before and was happy with the results. But for some reason I still felt like I had to use wax as my go-to because that's what I kept reading about in all my research. María uses polycrylic type top coat on ALL of her pieces. I think it's great and I'm so grateful to her for helping me see the light! Not that she "preaches" to always use polyacrylic, it's just what she prefers and I decided that if it looks good on her, then it looks good on me! Thank you Maria! 😉

wax as accent

I can't say I'll never use wax again (in part because I still have about half an unused can and that's too expensive to throw away!), but clear coat top coats are definitely top picks for the commission. projects I should probably also clarify that I'm only talking about the wax as a final finish. There are lots of fun colored crayons that I will continue to use to add dimension and texture.

And I love tooWise Owl Furniture Ointment. Not to seal paint (which it can be used for) but to revive raw wood to its natural grain and color. I love using this on the inside of my garment drawers to freshen them up and make them smell amazing. Do you have a used part that smells musty? After a good cleaning, apply a scented version of Furniture Salve to deodorize and neutralize the odor, as well as giving your customer a nice surprise of kindness when they open the drawers.

As I said before, I'm sure some of you love wax and will disagree with my opinions. This is what makes us unique and I welcome your thoughts in the comments. Thanks for reading!

I have used Polycrylic many times with great satisfaction. I even used it on the hardwood (plywood) floors I put in our home (with dogs) over a year ago. It has held up very well. I'm not a fan of wax either.

I agree with all your points and especially your comment that wax is expensive. I think branded chalk paint is very trendy and that sometimes influences people's decisions to use it. Recently, I've come across artists who do their own paintings and produce amazing work, both with furniture and other types of home decor. I use leftover wax to mix with paint or stain to create distressed or accented effects. Again, cheaper than buying lots of different colored crayons. I appreciate this post and you are willing to express an opinion outside of what is popular! Thanks!

I'm one of those furniture painters who make their own chalk paint 🙂 I also use Minwax finishing paste wax which seems to cure faster. I also add stain to give the pieces an antique look. I can't afford to use brand name paints and waxes. Would have to raise prices than selling LOL. But maybe you have to try those two products you mentioned.

I just started using GF products which I love. One question... I like painted bases with wooden tops. Flat Out Flat looks too boring to the top. Is there a way to lighten this up a bit? I also used High Performance, but it's brighter than the look I'm trying to achieve. Thanks.

Hi Kathie, The Performance Topcoat is available in four different glosses: Matte, Satin, Semi-Gloss and Shimmer. I would recommend trying the satin finish for a little shine. Another finish that I like from General Finishes, especially for large surfaces like a dining table, is the Gel Topcoat. Much easier to apply and the finish is a hand-rubbed look, not too shiny. I would try it out on a practice surface first to see if you like it. I would love to know which one ends up working for you. Good luck!

Hello April, thank you so much for this post. Honestly, I used wax many times, I was never satisfied with the results! I tried every way and really believed that I was doing something wrong! PS I've been restoring furniture for almost 40 years... I used to sell my furniture on consignment at a store that was an Annie Sloan dealer, so I was asked to represent their products in my work. I used to cheat by adding a little turpentine to the wax. It helped a little, but still not great. I recently started using the entire General Finishes line of products and I won't be shaving anymore! Flat Out Flat is the best product I have ever used! Her gel stains are amazing, her milk paints are amazing, and all her top coats are fabulous and easy to work with. Thank you so much for reassuring me that I am not incompetent!

April- I agree with all your points. The doubt I have is that I want to reach the minimum in the details of a piece of furniture BUT I don't want to change the general color of the piece. I looked up Heirloom Traditions Gel Wax as you can use water and wipe off the vivid color on your lower body. Anyway, I think I want to put on a topcoat like a poly or one of the GF products you mentioned. Can I seal with a non-wax product over Heirloom Traditions gel wax? What do you know? What is your experience? Good article! Thanks for sharing all your thoughts.

Hi Jennifer! Heirloom Traditions Gel Wax will work well for what you are trying to achieve. I would suggest only applying it to the areas that have the details you want to highlight, not the entire piece. Then, of course, you would erase it from the high areas and the color would remain in the low areas. And, yes, you should be able to use a water-based polyester top coat over HT Gel Wax because it is water-based (hence the ability to wipe it off with a damp cloth and clean it with soap and water). I haven't tried it yet, but I know from using the gel wax that it doesn't have the sticky, waxy feel of other waxes. Also, a general rule of thumb is that water-based products can be used over other water-based products without any problems. Thanks for reading! I hope it helps!

Hello chalk painting lovers and users of wax or not, as the case may be.

Well, with a series of pine furniture in our bungalow, I decided to try changing the look of all but one at a time, and starting with the smallest one first. I was a little confused whether I should paint with chalk or a roller. I was unimpressed with my first brush coat. A friend painted beds, occasional furniture, closets, dressers and they turned out great. What she told me was that, like me, she is good at painting walls with a brush and roller, but all of her furniture was done with a roller, except for the thin parts where a brush was needed. So I went to Wilkinsons and bought a roller, a tray and some spare rollers. Bright. It gives a large surface area and no brush marks. So thanks buddy for that. Oh, by the way, it took him weeks to do all of her paintings too. So, I got to the waxing stage. So many different options and opinions, so I guess it's all trial and error and not at all how I've been reading. So my can of clear wax is in the mail. This is where I need help.

I read and watched several videos on how to paint with chalk and then wax. I also saw people demonstrating how to make models. Maybe I missed something, but none of the people who spoke said the order in which you wax, rather than when you stencil. As in (1) I appreciate you waxing your furniture first, wiping off the excess as the demos advise (2) Do you start with the stencil next and then remove the stencil allowing the pattern to dry? (3) Then wax the stencil or not, as the case may be. Do I just stencil and leave it but NOT wax over the top of the stencil? i.e. if I do this will the wax remove the entire pattern? Maybe someone can let me know by leaving a comment.

april hyde August 21, 2018 at 12:32 pm

Hi Anne, I admit that I have no experience stenciling furniture. However, the general rule of thumb is that waxing is always the last thing you do if you choose to wax. The same goes for any other finish you decide to use. You'll probably want to seal whatever product you used to paint onto the stencil, so you'll also need to apply a wax or top coat over the stencil. As long as your chalk paint dries completely, your stencil should not be rubbed off by applying wax or top coat. If you are waxing I would be careful of the stencil area just in case first time ironing until I am sure it is sealed. Then apply a second coat for extra protection. I hope this helps.

Hi Donna, I always apply at least two coats of polyacrylate because you will lose some spots in the first coat and the second coat will help you get full coverage. For areas like a dressing table, I would apply three coats for extra protection. You should do a very light sanding with 220 grit between coats for a smooth finish. I hope it helps!

    Hello april,
I've been painting with ASCP for years. I have also been using GF completely as my topcoat. My technique was to put a layer of shellac on before painting to prevent bleeding. This works fine. But for the last year or so, as soon as I put the top coat on, the paint was creaking. My dealers couldn't figure it out. Any idea?

Hi Julie, this has happened to me before too. One theory I've heard is that the alcohol in shellac can affect the paint's drying time and cause it to crack. I stopped using shellac and instead always use Wise Owl Stain Remover Primer (it's water based) when I need something to block tannins or help with coverage of lighter or red colored paint. I hope it helps.
